On January 1, 2024, KLP48 was announced as AKB48 group's first overseas sister group based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The initial audition for KLP48, titled "KLP48 1st Generation Audition ~I Shine from the Heart of Asia~," was conducted. The final selection resulted in 9 members chosen from the auditions, along with 4 Japanese members who transferred from AKB48 and STU48, forming the 13-member first generation of KLP48. The group made a spectacular debut on August 18 in front of an audience of about 2,000 people.

With this, KLP48 is officially 7th overseas 48-group, following JKT48 (Jakarta, started in 2011), BNK48 (Bangkok, started in 2017), MNL48 (Manila, started in 2018), AKB48 Team SH (Shanghai, started in 2018), AKB48 Team TP (Taipei, started in 2018), and CGM48 (Chiang Mai, started in 2019).
